Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day. We'd like to share the stories of three people who witnessed the Nazi crimes firsthand, survived and came to Sweden.

Eva Israel was not even three years old when SS soldiers came to her home in Duisburg looking for her father, teacher in a Jewish school and cantor in the synagogue. Eva and her mother managed to leave Germany for Sweden, and her brother joined them later on – but she never met her father again. The last records of him say he was deported to Auschwitz–Birkenau. Today, Eva lives in the south of Sweden and has four children and eight grandchildren.

Kiwa Zyto was seven when the war came to Poland. He lived with his family in Kielce, which was bombed and then turned into a labour camp by the Nazis. Kiwa's father disappeared – never to be seen again. Kiwa and his mother were deported to Auschwitz–Birkenau, but they were immediately separated. Facing execution, Kiwa escaped. He was then in the labour camps of Dachau and Landberger. After the war, he somehow managed to find one of his older brothers, and they could rejoin their mother who had gone to Sweden on the White Buses – a Swedish Red Cross operation. At the age of twelve, Kiwa could go back to school again, in Sweden. At the end of 2023, he passed away.

Hanna Dimitri (née Brezinska) grew up in a Roma family in Poland. When she was ten, in 1939, Nazi soldiers took her and her little sister to Auschwitz–Birkenau. The rest of the family was executed. Her little sister was sent to the gas chambers after only a few weeks, but Hanna was sent to work in different camps. In 1945, Hanna and her cousin made their way to Sweden on the White Buses. Here, Hanna married and had four children. She died in 1992.

These personal accounts and photos are a part of an exhibition, 'Seven lives', shown at the newly opened Swedish Holocaust Museum.

Eva and her mother managed to leave Germany for Sweden, and her brother joined them later on – but she never met her father again. The last records of him say he was deported to Auschwitz–Birkenau. Today, Eva lives in the south of Sweden and has four children and eight grandchildren." }, { "type": "paragraph", "anchorId": "", "children": "Kiwa Zyto was seven when the war came to Poland. He lived with his family in Kielce, which was bombed and then turned into a labour camp by the Nazis. Kiwa's father disappeared – never to be seen again. Kiwa and his mother were deported to Auschwitz–Birkenau, but they were immediately separated. Facing execution, Kiwa escaped. He was then in the labour camps of Dachau and Landberger. After the war, he somehow managed to find one of his older brothers, and they could rejoin their mother who had gone to Sweden on the White Buses – a Swedish Red Cross operation. At the age of twelve, Kiwa could go back to school again, in Sweden.
