How to use the video

This video tells the story of sculptor Sven Boberg and his ironic contribution to a competition for a national monument. The video is a part of the toolkit Swedish Art Moments.

You can use the video on social media, independently or on a specific calendar day, such as 3 May (World press freedom day) or 2 December (Swedish Freedom of the press act 1766). Here you have the possibility to highlight local landmarks or national monuments in your captions.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Swedish parliament decided to hold a competition for a landmark for Sweden. But they were pranked. Lowe Smith Jonsson tells the story of how sculptor Sven Boberg 'trolled' the competition with his own version of Mother Swea, mythical protector of Sweden.

Normally, Mother Swea is depicted as a powerful female warrior, holding a shield and standing beside a lion – Boberg's version is anything but that. It never saw the day as a full-scale monument, but in its little size it’s a powerful testimony to artistic freedom.

On 2 December 1766, Sweden - which at that time also comprised Finland - was the first country in the world to acknowledge the freedom of the press. Freedom of expression has since become something of a national feature, itself worthy of a monument!
