National Day of the Sami people The colours of the Sami flag from 1986 (blue, red, yellow and green) are those most commonly found on traditional Sami garbs. It’s celebrated every year, on 6 February, in northern parts of Sweden, Norway and Finland, as well as in the Kola Peninsula in Russia.
This day marks the anniversary of the first Sami national meeting held in Trondheim, Norway, back in 1917.
About 20,000 Sami people live in Sweden – with their own cultural heritage, language, flag and parliament. The Sami are one of the world's indigenous peoples, and one of Sweden's five official national minorities.
